OSSD: By helping children gain digital literacy and other essential transferrable skills, Ontario aims to help them succeed in school, job, and all aspects of their lives.” Policy/Program Memorandum (PPM) 167, outlining the revised graduation criterion for online learning, has been released by the ministry and will take effect on February 1, 2022.
The goal of the online learning graduation requirement is that all students have access to high-quality online learning options in a modern education system. As a result, they’ll be better equipped to succeed in school and the increasingly digital global market.
Students who begin Grade 9 in 2020-2021 will be required to complete two online learning credits to receive their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). The PPM, including the following, provides more details and guidance:
- An OSSD-accredited school’s online learning credits may be counted toward the graduation requirement for all students.
- Thank you for the extraordinary steps during the COVID-19 epidemic; up to one secondary school credit earned by Grade 9 pupils during the province-wide school shutdown (from April 2021 to June 2021) may be recognized against the new graduation requirement.
Additionally, the PPM stipulates that parents and guardians will be able to decide whether or not online learning is acceptable and valuable for their children and that they may choose to forego the required online learning credits.
The Ontario Student Transcript form will be amended to reflect the online learning graduation requirement. It can still be ordered from Lowe Martin Company Inc. Templates for secondary final report cards will be revised to recall the new benchmarks for online learning graduation. A follow-up memo will provide additional information.
When a school’s religious or educational mission conflicts with the Ontario Student Record (OSR) requirement, its principal may exclude all students from this graduation requirement if they are First Nation/federally operated, inspected private, or inspected international schools. Each student must have a copy of their Ontario Student Record that includes the rationale for their exemption from the graduation requirement in the school’s course calendar. The graduation requirement will not apply to the student after the explanation for the exemption is entered into the student’s Ontario Student Record. Student transcripts should list “Online Graduation Requirement – N/A” as the requirement for graduation.
